High-protein bars and jerky for the drive home. Grab them with your pickup order.
Protein bars, honestly assessed
A protein bar is a convenience food. It is better than the gas-station alternative on the drive home and worse than actual chicken and rice. Bought with that in mind, it is a genuinely useful thing to keep in a work truck or a gym bag.
What to look for on the wrapper
- Protein per calorie. A good bar runs roughly 15 to 20g of protein in 200 to 250 calories. If it is 10g of protein and 350 calories, it is a candy bar with a claim on it.
- Sugar alcohols. Maltitol and sorbitol keep the sugar number down and are the reason some "keto" bars send people running for a bathroom mid-shift. Erythritol and allulose are usually easier to tolerate.
- Fiber. 5 to 10g helps with fullness. Above that, from isolated fibers, tends to cause the same problem as sugar alcohols.
- First ingredient. If it is a syrup rather than a protein, you know what you bought.
Bar vs. jerky vs. RTD shake
Bars hold up in heat and travel well; the crunch-style ones are the most food-like. Beef jerky is the highest protein per calorie in the store and has no sugar problem, but it is salty — which, on a hot outdoor work day, is often a feature rather than a flaw. Ready-to-drink shakes from the cooler are the fastest 30g of protein you will get, and the easiest thing to keep down right after a hard session when solid food does not appeal.
When a snack is the right call
Between a job site and the gym, when the alternative is nothing. On a long drive. As the third or fourth protein feeding of a day when you have already eaten real meals. What it should not be is a routine meal replacement — it is not enough food, and per gram of protein it is the most expensive way to eat in this store.
Cold drinks
We keep a cooler of energy drinks and ready-to-drink protein for grab-and-go. If you are already drinking two energy drinks a day, be aware of the total caffeine before you add a pre-workout on top of it — 400mg a day is the usual ceiling for healthy adults, and one can plus one scoop can put you there by noon.
